My new favorite theme

Oh man, I love this theme! Yeah, I know... Vrunner engine themes kind of look the same, but this one blends seamlessly with the ubuntu human color scheme.
Use either the stock human gtk theme, or the murrina fancy human theme if you're feeling adventurous.
To me, this combo looks like an ubuntu-ized version of OS X Leopard, except maybe a little better. ;)

The basics of bling

This blog is going to be about all things bling, not just one project or another. So here is a list of awesome stuff.
  • Murrine is probably the nicest gtk+ theme out right now. Very fast, looks very good, and is very customizable. Cimi is the man!
  • This GDM login screen is my favorite right now. It's ubuntu branded though...
  • InterfaceLIFT has a lot of cool wallpapers and the widescreen section is especially useful to me.
  • OSX icon pack from gnome-look is very good, although not perfect.
  • Everyone knows about Beryl I'm sure. A few tips...
    • Use the state plugin for extra awesomeness.
      • In the opacity section of the state plugin, add these for barely see through menus (looks great with the blur plugin going) and to make icons transparent when you drag them.
        • w:PopupMenu:90
        • w:DropdownMenu:90
        • w:DND:70
          • you can change the number at the end for different opacitys.
    • In the water plugin check on Window wave on system bell for a nice alternative to the annoying beep (some people call it the system bell).
    • Under General Options, make sure detect refresh rate is unchecked, and turn the refresh rate up to 200.
I guess that's about it for the basics. Basically, Google is your friend.

Beryl's server problems

Well,'s server went poof. Hard drive failure they say... Hey, y'know, it happens. As a matter of fact, it happens all the time. I'm sure the whole team learned a valuable lesson from this.

There is a silver lining though. The SVN backup is safe ,so the coders didn't lose all their work. Also, the forum gets to start over. I say that as a good thing because there was way too much info in there. A lot of those walkthroughs stopped working when drivers changed or when new revisions of anything came out.

Let's hope everything gets back to normal soon.

I'm here to blog about linux bling and chew gum...

And I'm all out of gum.

Alright, we all love eye candy on our linux boxen, right?

Well, I do anyway. Everyone knows Beryl is moving fast, but I'm sure there is a lot of important work going on in other places. I will be scouring mailing lists and IRC to see whats going on in the world of development, and report back anything that I find interesting. So tell all your friends, there's a new kid on the block.
